The woman who stares out at you from the cover of Lost in the Trees’ second album resembles a Renaissance muse more than a photographed subject. She is the mother of the band’s frontman Ari Picker, and she took her own life in 2009. That loss naturally haunts the musician, as such a tragedy would anyone, but A Church That Fits Our Needs addresses her death in a roundabout way, favoring allegorical storytelling over straightforward eulogizing. Picker infuses his lyrics with North American magical realism, full of dark forest, dead birds, mysterious churches and ominous lakes, and the band soundtracks them with florid arrangements that stop just shy of fussy.

Fresh off a sold-out album release party, Bill Coffey‘s excellent new album Cemetery Skyline Rose is now available in physical form exclusively at The Record Exchange!

Cemetery Skyline Rose features 11 new original songs by Coffey, performed with accompaniment by an all-star lineup of Boise music luminaries. Collectively, they are known as Bill Coffey and His Cash Money Cousins and include Bernie Reilly, Casey Miller, Chris Galli, Dave Manion, Jonah Shue and Thomas Paul, plus special guest Curtis Stigers.

The Knux will perform live at The Record Exchange (1105 W. Idaho St., Downtown Boise) at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 21. As always, this Record Exchange in-store performance is free and all ages. The Knux is performing at The Shredder later that night (9 p.m.).
