ABOUT YOUTH LAGOON AND ‘SAVAGE HILLS BALLROOM’

Youth Lagoon – aka Boise native Trevor Powers – is releasing his third album, Savage Hills Ballroom, on Sept. 25 via Fat Possum Records (limited-edition gold vinyl comes out on Vinyl Tuesday, Sept. 22). Often perceived as a recluse (his first LP is called The Year of Hibernation, after all), on Savage Hills Ballroom Powers has fully opened himself to the world for the first time ever. The 10-track collection is his most ambitious, unguarded work to date, recorded in Bristol, UK and co-produced/mixed/engineered by Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Gravenhurst).

While touring on his last record, 2013’s Wondrous Bughouse, Powers got a call that one of his closest friends had unexpectedly passed away, forcing him to cancel the rest of the tour and head back to Idaho. He says, “That experience made me start viewing Youth Lagoon differently – it was a complete refocus for me.”

This sense of gilded rebirth floods the instrumentation on Savage Hills Ballroom – Power’s vocals are largely unadorned and his pop-conscious electronics reach new feats of precision. Meanwhile the lyrics explore darker territory. “Kerry” is the story of Powers’ revered uncle whose drug addiction led him to running from the law for most of his adult life, while “Highway Patrol Stun Gun” imagines Biblical end-times through the lens of the recent cases of police brutality.

NPR called Wondrous Bughouse “the most arresting headphones record you’ll hear all year,” but on Savage Hills Ballroom Powers has taken off the cans and made a record meant to communicate, rather than shut out. “I think I’ve had a lot of barriers in my life in general that I don’t let people past, and I’ve gotten really sick of all that,” he explains, “It’s too tiring trying to pretend you don’t have as many flaws as everyone else.”

ABOUT TREEFORT MUSIC FEST

IDAHO. With our vast wilderness areas and mountain ranges, clean rivers and lakes, open prairies and big skies, this big little state in the NW can often feel like living on the frontier of a young developing nation — and it’s exciting times on the frontier. Here in Boise, the capitol city, in the midst of a vibrant downtown scene of young professionals, mom-and-pop local businesses, bars and nightclubs, late night pizza joints, college town energy, and progressive-minded city planning — there’s a music, dance, theater and arts scene with a fresh, vibrant outlook producing ever-growing excitement here in Boise as well as from eyes and ears outside of the Treasure Valley.

Boise has for years received accolades for being a great place to live and raise a family, but in recent years it’s been getting increased attention as a hot spot for young up-and-coming artists. It’s in this spirit, that we introduce you to TREEFORT MUSIC FEST. Conceived as an extension of the current momentum in the Boise music scene and art scene at large, our vision is that Treefort will provide the opportunity for Boise to play host to the national and regional music scenes while showcasing the local up-and-coming talent. We see Treefort as another stepping stone for our young scene — to further introduce emerging national, regional and local artists to the music fans in the Treasure Valley so that future tour stops by those bands will be greeted with more and more familiar faces and encourage more artists to consider Boise a relevant stop on their tours.

ABOUT SISTER SPARROW AND THE DIRTY BIRDS

418456463808-500The Catskill Mountains hid rock ‘n’ roll’s best kept secret for almost 18 years. Then in 2008, singer and songwriter Arleigh Kincheloe said goodbye to her hometown hideaway and moved to New York City to start Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds. In the years since, the group has performed more than 600 shows, released two full-length albums and an EP and enchanted tastemakers ranging from the Wall Street Journal and LA Times to Glamour, USA Today, and the New Yorker. They have shared the stage with such heavyweights as Gov’t Mule, Dr. John, Trombone Shorty, The Avett Brothers, Counting Crows and Galactic, and have turned audiences into believers through appearances on the festival circuit at Bonnaroo, Firefly, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Voodoo Music Experience and many more. In May, the band unleashed 10 irresistible anthems that comprise The Weather Below, their most rambunctious, raucous and righteous recording to date. The album was produced by Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Vance Joy) and was released by Nashville-based Thirty Tigers.

ABOUT IDYLTIME

Idyltime, a band originally playing bluegrass out of southern Oregon, reformed in 2011 when Beth and Tate Mason moved to Boise, Idaho. There they joined up with Dave Daley and Ava Honey, who were hosting the weekly old-time jam at Pengilly’s. Dave and Ava continue to be extremely active in developing the acoustic roots music and square dance scene in Boise. With over 40 years of fiddling, Dave brings a lifetime of musical experience to the original songwriting of Idyltime. Most people can hear a certain song and it will take them back to a prior experience, maybe to a feeling had and relived through a melody. Idyltime is comprised of four souls eternally searching for the source of this nostalgia. People often tell us that our music takes them back to a memory, and it reminds them of the good in the world.
